The basics of Pilates
Six principles –
why they are so
magically important:
If you’ve already attended a Pilates class, you’ll know:
It’s about much more than just movement! In this blog post, you will discover the basics of Pilates, six principles and how they guide you throughout your training.
Pilates is an invitation to dive deeper into your body, consciously connect with your breath and realign yourself from the inside out. What makes this holistic training method so special, are the six principles that guide you through every exercise like a luminous guide – whether in Pilates mat or equipment training, the six magical principles form the basis of every Pilates class.

A brief
look back:
Joseph Pilates, the creative mind behind the method, was convinced that true health comes from the unity of body, mind and soul. His form of training – originally called Contrology – is based on controlled, conscious movement to strengthen the deep-lying muscles and sustainably improve posture. And this is exactly where his six principles come into play!
Control
Pilates means body awareness.
Control is the key to conscious movement – with strength, clarity and a deep feeling for your body. There is no room for hasty movements in Pilates. You lead your body – not the other way round, which is particularly noticeable on the Pilates equipment. Every little instability is immediately recognised – and invites you to become even more precise.
Concentration
Pilates means presence.
Your body does not follow automatically, but is controlled with your full attention. Every movement is consciously and clearly guided. Especially in the Pilates equipment training, where resistance and guidance interlock precisely, this mental presence becomes the basis of your training.
Centre
Pilates means body stabilisation.
‘Powerhouse’ – this is what Joseph Pilates called the centre of the body, which is active in every Pilates movement. Your stability flows from this inner source of strength. Whether on the Pilates Wunda Chair or on the mat. The equipment helps you to feel your ‘Powerhouse’ and to strengthen your core in a targeted way.
The six principles are at the heart of Pilates – they give the method structure, depth, and meaning. Those who embrace them embark on a journey toward greater body awareness, inner balance, and true joie de vivre.

Breath
Pilates means strength.
Your breath is your inner rhythm. In Pilates, breathing is used consciously to support movements and release tension. Especially in combination with the movement sequences on the equipment, where your body is guided by the spring resistance. Conscious breathing is your centre of strength to prevent injuries and to really grow.
Precision
Pilates means body alignment.
It’s not the ‘more’ that counts here, but the ‘how’. Small, precise movements have a big effect – if they are performed with mindfulness. The Pilates equipment training challenges you in a playful way: every posture, every body alignment counts. Precision adds depth to your training and strengthens your body in a healthy and holistic way.
Flow
Pilates means mobility.
Pilates is not a choppy exercise programme. The movements flow harmoniously into one another. Especially in the Pilates Reformer or Tower Unit Training. A flowing style of movement is created that gives the body space, strength and balance. A true experience!
